1. What is Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps?

The Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps is a component of the Citizens Corps that organizes local health professional volunteers to assist regular medical response professionals and facilities during a large-scale local emergency.  RI MRC is a community-based, organized group of volunteers who can serve during a local emergency health situation and assist with local public health needs.

2. Who Can Volunteer?

 Any Licensed health care professional can volunteer; active or retired.

3. What is the purpose of Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps?

The purpose of the RI MRC is to strengthen the medical and emergency resources within our own community.  Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps allows residents to participate in addressing and solving the public health concerns within their community.  Rhode Island, like other states and areas, has it's own needs, issues, and concerns and there is no one better equipped to handle those needs than the professionals willing to volunteer their time and expertise to their own communities and neighborhoods. 

 

4. What is the commitment?

Commitment to the RI MRC is minimal.  We ask that you give your time when you can.  However, we do emphasize the need to keep up with training. Trainings are offered throughout the year and are posted on this website on the training page.

 

5. What type of malpractice insurance do I need?

The RI MRC, if activated by the State of RI, would be covered under Title 30, Military Affairs and Defense Chapter 30-15, Emergency Management, Section 30-15-15. See the link to MRC title 30 for more information. We at RI MRC also suggest maintaining your own malpractice coverage for personal security and safety.

6. How do I know when RI MRC needs help?

The Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps will keep on file the telephone numbers provided and will call members on a mass calling system called Alert Cast.  The Alert Cast will notify members with a message as to the type of need and where to call or meet if we are requested by the State or local community.

7. Are there any educational requirements?

There are no educational requirements needed to become a part of the Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps.  All that is required is a desire to assist your community, volunteer your time, and attend as many trainings and lectures as possible.  

8. How do I become a member?

Becoming a member of the Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps is as easy as filling out the application on this website and submitting a copy of your current licensure and drivers license.  If you would feel more comfortable with a paper application, let us know and we'll send it out right away. 

9. Are there any health requirements needed to become a member?

The Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps requires all members remain up to date with the Immunizations listed below. For those members that need to be updated,  these vaccines are available with your personal physician or through one of the many immunization days held throughout the year that are available to you as a member of RI MRC. These dates and times are posted here on the website.  Please, feel free to take advantage of this opportunity.

10. Do I get paid?

No.  The Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps is a volunteer organization.  If the corps was activated, you would be volunteering to help the State of Rhode Island or your own community without any compensation.  Any time you could offer would be a benefit to the cause.
